2026 Coaches

Our coaches are the true definition of Hurricane Swim Family.

Most all swam for the Hurricanes growing up. They have been junior coaches, aged out, and now they continue their Hurricane journey as our coaching staff.

Our coaches truly love the Hurricanes and can't imagine their summers without their Hurricane family.

Stay tuned for updates on our 2026 coaching lineup!

Coach Abbey Head Coach

Hi! Head Coach Abbey here. I have been a member of the Hurricanes since 1995 when I started as a swimmer in the 6 and unders. I swam until aging out, which is when I started coaching our wonderful team. In addition to coaching summer league in the past, I also had the amazing opportunity to work with and coach a number of triathletes. I think swimming is a great sport and will always be incorporated in my life in some manner. For my year-round job, I work for a number of different home health agencies and outpatient facilities as a physical therapist. I earned my doctorate in physical therapy back in 2015 at the University of St. Augustine.

I can’t fully express how thrilled I am for another Hurricane swim season. This team has become my home away from home and my family. I am so excited and honored to be able to witness and be a part of everyone’s success this summer! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

Coach Garry

My name is Garry Tuttle. I’ve been around swimming my whole life and I’m excited to be a part of the Hurricane family!

I swam my high school years at the “Dads Club”, in Houston, Texas under “Skip” Kenney (Stanford) and Rob Orr (Princeton) and my college years at The University of Texas under Eddie Reese.

I was a member of Dad’s Club 15-17 boys 800 freestyle relay setting a National Record for that age group and a member of UT’s 1978 NCAA 800 freestyle relay. I qualified for Nationals in 1978 in the men’s 100m freestyle and was ranked in the USA’s top 50. I graduated from the University of Texas in 1983 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

I participated in the Northwest Swim Circuit (NWSC) from 1995-1999 serving 2 years as a Circuit Representative, one year as a Vice-President and 2 years as President of the Anderson Mill Barracudas. Became a South Texas Swimming Stroke/Turn Official while my daughter was swimming for her club team (Nitro) during her high school years. I coached at Nitro from 2008-2010, coaching groups from the Developmental Team to the Senior Champs.

I am married to Susan (Retired Elementary Teacher) and have two grown children and four grandchildren. The past several summers, I have really enjoyed watching my grandkids swim in the NWSC. I love coaching, interacting with the swimmers, watching them compete, seeing them improve their times, watching their excitement when picking up their ribbons, etc. I’m all about time improvement – to get a new “personal best” (PB) is the best feeling! Another rewarding aspect of coaching for me is when a swimmer is working hard to change/correct something in their swimming and they finally “get it”. It’s very gratifying for both the swimmer and me! I always think of summer league swimming as the first rung on the ladder of competitive swimming. I am retired and love spending some of my free time coaching swimming!

Coach Kate

Hi, I’m Kate, and I’m excited to be back in the pool this summer! I’ve been part of the Hurricanes since 2010, spending nine years as a swimmer and the past five as a coach. Over the years, I’ve also taught swim lessons at Nitro Swim, British Swim School, and Rattan Creek Pool, where you’ll often find me during the summer. If you see me around, don’t hesitate to say hi!

Being part of this team means so much to me, and it’s something I look forward to every year. I especially enjoy watching swimmers grow in confidence, develop their skills, build lasting friendships and have fun!

I am finishing up my teaching certificate and plan to teach at an elementary school this upcoming fall! Prior to that, I graduated from Texas State University with my B.A. in History! When I’m not at the pool I like to read, go to the movies, play with my cats, hang out with friends or bake!

Coach Josh

Howdy! My name is Josh Li, and this will be my 2nd season coaching with the Hurricanes. I started swimming as a Hurricane when I was five, and continued until I aged out, breaking two records along the way. I also swam on the McNeil Swim and Dive Team throughout high school. I'm now a student at Texas A&M University, studying communication and biochemistry.

Coaching last year was such an awesome experience. It was incredible watching weeks and weeks of swimmers' work culminate in one race where everything "clicked." I had so much fun celebrating with swimmers as they chased after personal bests, earned invitational times, and even broke team records!

I'm excited to be back, and I can't wait to see what this season brings! Go 'Canes!

Coach Trevor

Hey ‘Canes, my name is Coach Trevor. This is my second summer coaching for the Hurricanes, and twelfth summer spent on the pool deck. I grew up playing baseball, football, basketball, and soccer, and didn’t do much at the pool besides tricks off the diving board until I got to college. That’s when I started lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons at the YMCA, and I was hooked.

I earned my B.S. in Kinesiology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro but like to pretend I went to Duke during March Madness. When I’m not at the pool, I’m working as an Account Executive at Spectrum Reach, hanging out with my dogs and girlfriend Coach Maggie, and trying to perfect my pickleball game. I’m excited to set big goals and help y’all chase them. Here’s to a great season ahead!
